This is useful when using some prepositions,

so you know if that part of the sentence is “Akkusativ” or “Dativ”.

Some examples of use:

Akk:

Ohne dich bin ich nichts. (Without you I am nothing)

Dieses Buch ist für den Jungen. (This book is for the boy)

Dat:

Ich komme aus den Niederlanden. (I come from the Netherlands)

Er arbeitet bei einer großen Firma. (He works at a big company)
